Book Miss Minimalist: Inspiration to Downsize, Declutter, and Simplify Review :

Having recently read this author's book  The Joy of Less: A Minimalist Guide to Declutter, Organize, and Simplify (Updated and Revised) , I thought it was so good that I went ahead and picked this book up as well. A brief description of the first book:The book is divided into four parts:1 - Philosophy2 - STREAMLINE3 - Room by Room4 - LifestylePart 1 addresses what the philosophy is behind minimalism. Seeing our material possessions for what they are, less stuff = less stress, less stuff = more freedom, etc. It is the 'why'. Parts 2 and 3 address the overall 'how' as well as a room by room approach for reducing our stuff. Part 4 addresses topics such as how to get our families to to embark on this same journey (including children) and then talks about how consuming less is helpful for the environment and how to be a thoughtful consumer of what we do chose to purchase.I would recommend reading that book before reading this one. The  The Joy of Less: A Minimalist Guide to Declutter, Organize, and Simplify (Updated and Revised)  is more comprehensive giving significant time to the discussion of "why". This book could stand on it's own, but I like the idea of this being a more nuts-and-bolts followup to the first one. Miss Minimalist: Inspiration to Downsize, Declutter, and Simplify  is a shorter, more concise publication that spends more time on the "how" of the topic. These are short chapters devoted to specific topics. It would be easy to start and the beginning and read completely thru the book or you could pick it up and read a chapter or two at a time, focusing on the topics you are interested in. I have been on my own minimalism journey for about 15 years now and can tell you from experience this woman knows what she is talking about. The author stresses eliminating the clutter from your life before even thinking about organizing - there is no point in spending time organizing your clutter. She also is realistic in talking about the ongoing maintenance required and the shift in thinking that must take place to not return to the same level of clutter you began with. She still practices removing one unused/unneeded item from her home every single day. Things will creep back in and this technique allows you to remove 365 of them every single year without a lot of effort or dedication of time. I am not as discipled to remove one item each day, since I may remove 10 items one day and then nothing for a week, but it is a constant mindfulness of not storing something away but thoughtfully keeping it only if it necessary, brings joy, or simplifies my life. Also, there is one section talking about eBay where I feel like she lived in my house! We have been selling things on eBay fairly consistently for three years now. What initially seemed fun and a bit of a game is now nothing but work and aggravation. Here is a direct quote from the book that absolutely mirrors my own experience: "Ebay became my penance for ill-considered purchases. For me, the mere thought of eventually selling a purchase on eBay was a powerful deterrent to shopping. Crazy perhaps - but it kept my wallet full and my closets empty." Fabulous, practical, motivating advice from a woman who speaks with authority. This is a book I will return to often when I need to a bit of a booster shot to keep me focused on the goal. It's easy to get sucked back into purchasing items that seem like a good idea at the time or accepting that freebie being offered that you don't really want or tucking unwanted gifts into the back of the closet only to donate them years later still unused. One of my all time favorite books on the subject.
I am not a minimalist by any means, but Ms. Minimalist thoroughly enticed me with her blog about simple living.I stumbled across her site during a desperate attempt to declutter. Wow, less is actually more. How can that be? Logical? Maybe not in our consumer culture, but refreshing? It definitely is.As a person who grew up thinking that abundance and excess were the norm, I appreciate Ms. Minimalist's approach to minimalism. She doesn't overcomplicate the idea of minimalism. Basically, you should dictate the course of your life; don't let (your) stuff do it for you. Let everything that you decide to keep have a purpose (or many purposes), and don't keep stuff just to have stuff. Know that it's ok to not have to keep up with the Joneses (who are actually having a hard time keeping up with themselves). You don't have to upgrade your cellphone whenever a new model comes out, or get a new car every few years, or spend umpteen hours and dollars taking pretty pictures to post on your Facebook account to outdo the Joneses (phew, thank goodness!)There's wisdom in this kind of advice, a wisdom missing from our culture of consumerism that can be had by perusing the pages of this eBook, which is a compilation of 60 articles/ posts from her blog.I don't know if i agree with everything in the book, but this is still comforting advice for hard times, compiled into a cute, easily accessible eBook that takes up no room at all and can be lent to your friends or anyone you see fit. Definitely worth the 99 cents.
